20 HOURS RULE: dedicate 30 to 40 minutes a day, every day,
four-month to practicing a skill
1) Target Performance
Level: Decide exactly 1) you want
to do (the output skill), 2) how well you want to be able to do it (the level
of mastery of the output skill).
2) Deconstruct the
Skill: break the skill into sub
skills and practice the most important sub skills first
3) Researching: identify the most
important sub skills in the literature; find resources that will help you
identify (deconstruct) the most important sub skills
a) Don’t
allow the research to become a form of procrastination in itself.
b) Identify the concepts and
techniques that are recurrent.
4) Remove Barriers to
Practice: make it easy to do the
main sub skills that you want to get better at.
Ensure focus and undivided attention.
a) This reduces the level of
willpower that one needs to make oneself practice.
5) Pre-Commit to Practicing
in the above manner for 20 hours.
a) By doing so, you are guaranteed
to yourself that you can push past the first frustrating moments.
